Get a grasp of how you can live a greener life…

To celebrate World Earth Day on Thursday 19th April 2021, we’ve spent the week sharing news, advice, ideas and information across our blog and social media channels about some of the little changes that can make a big difference in being more sustainable. And at YTL Developments, we’re trying to do our bit…

For example, did you know how easy it is to get from Brabazon to Bristol City Centre by bike? Changing up your commute could really reduce your carbon footprint – why not watch the video and get inspired by Brabazon Journeys: Pedal down to Castle Park. Or have you ever thought about what a difference it would make to have solar panels on your roof? At Brabazon they are included as standard on every house.

You can find out more about our commitment to sustainability at Brabazon here.
But if you’re looking to go further, here are some simple ideas to help you make greener choices every day…

  1. Let your grass grow…

Cutting the grass can be a real chore. But did you also know that letting your grass grow longer is great for the environment? It will not only save you on petrol or electricity for the mower, but it will also encourage wildlife to visit your garden. Try waiting 3 to 4 weeks between cuts you will be amazed at the difference: dandelions, daisies and violets could bloom in spring, and buttercups, clovers and selfheal will follow in the summer months, attracting all kinds of butterflies, birds and bumblebees.

  2. Walk to work, cycle to the shops…

Most of us still need a car. But could we all use the car a little less every day? Cutting down your driving not only helps to reduce your carbon footprint, but it also improves air quality, creates calmer neighbourhoods and can do wonders for our health and wellbeing. Brabazon will be criss-crossed with cycle paths and walking routes, making it easier to be more active.

  3. Turn it off…

Simply switching off the lights or unused electrical items could conserve an amazing amount of energy. Not only could that make a huge difference to your carbon footprint, but the changes are often so small you’ll hardly notice them and you’ll be saving money on your energy bills too!

  4. Re-use, recycle …

For most of us, recycling and sorting our rubbish is part of our weekly routine. But have you thought about ways you could reduce waste, re-use or recycle other items? Maybe consider choosing bar soaps or re-fillable bottles to cut down on single-use plastics? Or try out a scheme such as Terracycle, which can recycle things your council’s regular collections can’t. Anything from coffee capsules to kids’ food pouches, bread bags and sweet wrappers can be recycled if you pop by their handy drop-off locations.

  5. Change up your shopping habits…

Sometimes you just can’t avoid a big supermarket shop. But Bristol is full of incredible independent food stores, with amazing produce from local farms across the South West. Why not try out a local greengrocer for your fruit and vegetables, a butcher for your meat or visit a zero-waste shop when you need to refill your pantry? These little changes should mean less packaging, fewer food miles and the knowledge your shopping is supporting local people. Check out some of our favourites stores here, to see what we mean.
